Though the town of West Yellowstone has the most lodging accomodations of all the gateway communities, there are times during the peak season where rooms are full at your chosen place to stay. Camping or RVing is a great alternative.
Many visitors to Yellowstone National Park prefer to enjoy the total outdoor experience by camping. The campgrounds around West Yellowstone are very clean and comfortable. They are operated by concessionaire Hebgen Basin Campgrounds in the Gallatin National Forest. There are 5 hosted campgrounds in the Hebgen Lake Ranger District
Camping out of West Yellowstone
Baker's Hole - 3 miles north of West Yellowstone, Montana. First-come, first-served. Baker's Hole is a large campground where the Madison River just leaves Yellowstone National Park. Because of its location, Baker's Hole is very popular for anyone interested in outdoor activities.
Beaver Creek - Situated in between Hebgen and Quake Lake 8 miles north of West Yellowstone on US 191. It is popular amongst fly fisherman here to fish the famous Madison River, Hebgen and Quake Lake.
Cabin Creek - Just across from the Beaver Creek campgound so pretty much the same qualities except Cabin Creek flows through it.
Lonesomehurst - Located 12 miles west of West Yellowstone, Lonesomehurst is a lakeside campground and even has a boat launch. It is situated on the South Fork Arm of the Madison River of Hebgen Lake.
Rainbow Point - This campground is 10 miles north of West Yellowstone and is situated on the Grayling Arm of Hebgen Lake. It the largest campground in the area and reservations can be made for this location at : Rainbow Point Campground

The West Yellowstone area also has dispersed camping offered Gallatin National Forest. They are Spring Creek Campground and Cherry Creek Campground and are approx. 18 miles northwest of West Yellowstone. These sites do not offer any amenities and the road can be treacherous and not recommended for larger rv's.
